you can hear the mics better from a board mix- that's all I meant...
Nice...La...when you say chasing the click.....what are you using for the click and are you using in ears??
I was using a click for this song because in when we practiced, I was having a hard time not rushing and locking with the bass player. It's set at a very comfortable 120 BPM, but soloing over it is a big challenge for me.
I was using my Tama Rhythm Watch for the click. I get a monitor mix from the board and mix my click together. I use Shure E5 in-ear monitors, which also helps with the sound reduction.

Sounds like a long lost Steely (la)Dan(ny) bootleg! Nice stuff. I loved hearing the crowd cheer you on. Thanks for posting it Danny.
Hey Danny,
Nice stuff and thanks for posting. OK, not to intensify the inner critic, but I think I can hear where you are struggling with the click here a little bit-- a couple measures where you had to back off of where you felt you wanted to put some beats to hang back with the click. Not big, not enough that it's terribly noticeable to anyone other than you. The solo overall has a great feel though. And I bet I could way out-slop you most any day of the week.
What really gets me about this is the role of the inner critic, something I have wanted to ask for help with here. This is probably the biggest stumbling block for me in drumming. The fact that you can post something you weren't quite confident of here is really cool, and an indication of trust of your fellow HODers. Very cool.
The perfectionism thing is pretty stifling sometimes. More than once in the recording studio, having to listen to my slop has caused near meltdowns of "I suck" and then I play worse, and spiral into a virtual 8-year-old "I hate drums" stomp off to a corner etc. At times, the fact that I can't nail something like Vinnie or DW makes me just want to quit. How childish is that?
So my question, reading this thread: how do you/people handle this stuff--i.e., taming the inner critic enough to allow yourself to make mistakes/grow? I tend to assume people here are all totally perfect awesome pros but I'm hoping you or someone here has feedback.
I would bet that all of your favorite players have heard themselves and thought they sucked at one time or another...
They were honest with themselves and worked on their weaknesses- they didn't give up.
That is why they are great today...
Ready to REALLY hear the slop? I got a copy of the board mix. This will give you a better idea of the drum/mic combination as well. Also, I'm using clear Evans G2s on the batter, G1s on the bottom.
Board Mix
As far as posting a clip I know is FAR from perfect, well, I know where my mistakes are so I doubt anyone could say anything I already don't know. I have nothing but respect for the great players on this board, so why wouldn't I welcome the feedback, good or bad? It's all part of learning.
Danny
Drums sound even better! Nice dude...thanks for sharing. The drums/mic/heads...you got a nice sound there..
Nice job, dude...

Either way, nice job- drums sounded HUGE...
Thanks for posting the info on the mic setup- too bad we couldn't hear the drums through them...

Sounds good, man. I like the spaces too. Nice licks, but not too choppy. Don't beat yourself up over every little time thing. BTW, you can always use the spaces to reset yourself to the click!
